Most startup investing advice comes with a big assumption: that you’ll patiently wait 7 to 10 years for a return. It’s the standard VC playbook—long timelines, big swings, and binary outcomes. But what if you're not willing (or able) to wait that long?

After working with thousands of retail investors across Europe, I’ve seen a different reality: liquidity matters. Life changes. Plans evolve. And the classic “patient capital” mantra doesn’t always align with real-world needs.

Strategic angels understand this. They approach early-stage investing with a different mindset—one that values **optionality, liquidity, and portfolio agility**.

Here’s what they do differently:

- **Sell partial stakes in later rounds.**
When a portfolio company raises a priced round, savvy investors often negotiate to sell a portion of their shares. It's not an exit—it’s a smart rebalancing move that frees up capital while still riding the upside.
- **Leverage secondary markets.**
Platforms and networks for secondary share sales have matured significantly in Europe. Angels who tap into these ecosystems can recycle gains and reinvest earlier, accelerating their compounding curve.
- **Take small wins seriously.**
Not every investment needs to be a unicorn to be valuable. Strategic investors often prefer multiple 2–3x returns over a decade-long quest for a 100x moonshot. Smaller, earlier exits provide liquidity and reduce portfolio risk.

Of course, not every investment will offer these options. Some companies won’t have the scale or governance in place for early exits. But by **designing a portfolio with exit optionality in mind**, investors increase the chances of active returns—and reduce their dependence on binary outcomes.

At BlueCherry, we help angels and early-stage investors think this way from the start. Because smart investing isn’t just about picking winners. It’s about knowing how—and when—you can get out.

In the coming posts, I’ll break down each of these exit strategies in more detail.

**Follow along if you’re ready to rethink how startup investing really works.**
